Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith has already recovered from his devastating leg injury. As it stands, his intention is to play in the upcoming season. However, Smith's return to action will only happen once he passes the physicals required for a returning injured player. Coach Ron Rivera discusses the opportunity for Alex Smith if everything goes well.

Based on an article posted by the Pro Football Talk featured in NBC Sports:

“If that happens, I think this is a guy that becomes part of our equation. That’s the truth of the matter,” Rivera said, via Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.

Alex Smith is currently placed in the physically unable to perform (PUP) list of the Washington-based team. If a player is not put on the PUP list to start camp, they can’t go on it at any other point. The move gives the team time to make sure Smith can do everything necessary to play the position.

His absence from the game was caused by a horrific injury sustained in a game against the Houston Texans. Smith suffered a spiral compound fracture to his tibia and fibula in his right leg after getting sacked by a couple of Texans defensive players in Kareem Jackson and J. J. Watt.

His injury eventually led to a formation of life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis which required multiple surgeries. Smith was forced to be hospitalized for a span of nine months.

The former University of Utah product is signed through the 2022 season. However, his eligibility for the upcoming season is still up in the air. Seeing Smith's comeback story should be a breath of fresh air for Washington fans who witnessed their team be bombarded controversies.
