Why The Royals Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Royals have played well this year and have a 42-34 record. They lost three straight before breaking that losing streak with a win in their last game. Their batting and pitching are just outside the top 10 units in the MLB. Seth Lugo has made a potent pitching combination with Brady Singer, Alec Marsh, and Cole Ragans. Their bats have been red-hot this season as well. Salvador Perez and Bobby Witt Jr. have been the main standouts for the Royals behind the plate, but Maikel Garcia and Vinnie Pasquantino have also played well. The Royals have been one of the bigger surprises this season after what happened last year.
The Royals are starting Brady Singer on the mound. He has a 4-4 record, a 3.39 ERA, and a 1.22 WHIP on the year up to this point. Through 77 innings, he has allowed 32 runs on 71 hits with 23 walks and 76 strikeouts. He has started in 14 games so far this season and the Royals are 9-5 in those games. Singer has had a great season for a strong pitching staff in Kansas City. He gets a favorable matchup against a Rangers offense that has taken a massive dip overall.
The Royals offense has been playing much better recently after a slower start. They are 11th in team batting average at .249 after finishing last season at .254. Their offensive output has been led mainly by Bobby Witt Jr. in almost every batting category. Witt Jr. leads in batting average at .322, in home runs at 12, in RBI at 53, in OBP at .371, and in total hits at 99. The Royals' offense gets an interesting matchup against Eovaldi because he has been great in his own right for the Rangers on the mound.
Why The Rangers Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Rangers have been inconsistent since winning the World Series last year on their way to a 34-40 record. They enter this matchup, breaking a five-game losing streak with a win in their last time out. They have dipped in batting average and are in the bottom half of the MLB with their bats, and then the same for their pitching. This offense is led by sluggers Adolis Garcia, Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, and Josh Smith. This offense is loaded overall with talent. Their pitching needs to play better overall. Nathan Eovaldi has taken center stage on the mound this season, but Jon Gray and Michael Lorenzen have also been decent pitching-wise.
The Rangers are starting Nathan Eovaldi on the mound and he has a 3-3 record, a 3.15 ERA, and a 1.17 WHIP. Through 60 innings this season, he has allowed 21 runs on 46 hits with 24 walks and 64 strikeouts. Eovaldi has played in 11 games this season and the Rangers are 6-5 in those games. Eovaldi has been great for the Rangers, but this is an interesting matchup against a red-hot offense like the Royals.
The Rangers' offense has taken a huge dip recently. They are 18th in team batting average at .236 after finishing as one of the best in the MLB with a .263 batting average last year. The offense is led by Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, and Josh Smith in most batting categories. Smith leads in batting average at .298 and in OBP at .388. Semien leads in RBI at 40 and in total hits at 75. Finally, Seager leads in home runs at 14. The Rangers' offense can match up with anyone in the MLB talent-wise, but they get a difficult matchup against Brady Singer on the mound for the Royals in this game.
Final Royals-Rangers Prediction & Pick
These two teams have been struggling recently to find any rhythm. The pitching matchup is very close between Eovaldi and Singer, but Eovaldi has been slightly better. The Rangers might be equal in talent level with the Royals on offense, but in terms of play, the Royals are much better currently because the Rangers have been slumping.
