Seattle Seahawks rookie wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba surprised many when he took the practice field on Wednesday just a week removed from surgery to repair a wrist injury. The sight of Smith-Njigba on the practice field had Seahawks fans and pundits wondering about his chances of suiting up for the team's Week 1 contest against the Los Angeles Rams.
Seattle head coach Pete Carroll raved about Smith-Njigba's recovery on Wednesday, adding that he is “hoping” that the Ohio State product will be available for the divisional tilt vs. the Rams, per Brady Henderson of ESPN.
“I'm hoping. I don't know. We'll see what happens. He looks great right now.”
It sounds like Carroll is a bit hesitant about Smith-Njigba for Week 1, but even if the rookie doesn't manage to get on the field in time for the season opener, it doesn't seem like he'll miss much more time than that.
Carroll said Smith-Njigba, who was selected with the 20th pick in the first round of April's NFL Draft, is “doing remarkably well”, saying that “he won't be denied” in his aim to return quickly.
Smith-Njigba broke a bone in his left wrist during the Seahawks' second preseason contest. Carroll had said he would be sidelined for three-to-four weeks, though the team's decision to keep him on the active roster was a subtle hint that they believe he could potentially beat that return timeline.
It certainly sounds like Smith-Njigba is well on his way to doing just that, which is an exciting prospect for Seahawks fans with the start of the NFL season around the corner.
