Seattle Seahawks star Earl Thomas didn't report to training camp on Wednesday and there is a good chance it will be a while until he does show up. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, there is a belief around the league that Thomas won't report to camp unless he is traded or gets a new contract.

According to Chris Mortenson of ESPN, there is “zero chance” of a new deal if Thomas doesn't report so this could be the start of a long standoff. Thomas is entering the final year of a four-year, $40 million deal and when he signed the deal it made him the highest paid safety in the league. Now the deal is only the 6th highest annual salary for a safety and Thomas wants to get his raise.

According to ESPN, holding out could get costly in a hurry:

By holding out from training camp, Thomas is subject to up to $40,000 in fines for every day he misses. After five days, the team can also fine Thomas 15 percent of his signing bonus proration plus an additional 1 percent for every day he misses beyond that, up to 25 percent.

The team can also decide not to fine Thomas, but if they do he is going to lose a lot of money very quickly. The Seahawks defense doesn't have a ton of star power left and without Thomas, the secondary is going to really have to scramble. Bradley McDougald will take his place for now at free safety and if Thomas does decide to sit out regular season games McDougald is going to have quite the shoes to fill.
