2019 was a great year for the San Francisco 49ers. Everyone expected them to be an improved team from the prior year. However, no one thought they be this good.

The 49ers went 13-3. That not only meant they won the NFC West, but they had the number one seed in the entire NFC.

San Francisco didn't stop there either. They made their way to the Super Bowl, and even had a pretty sizable lead in that game. However, the Kansas City Chiefs pulled on their comeback hats and won the game in the end.

That leaves the 49ers as the team closest to a Super Bowl victory this year, without actually getting one. So a few minor tweaks in the offseason could put them over the top.

Speaking of tweaks, they can make those changes in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. Currently, San Francisco has the 31st overall pick in the first round. Should they consider trading up in the draft, and going after a star talent?

There is a very simple answer to this, no.

The reason is simple as well, the 49ers aren't exactly swimming in draft stock.

As I've already said, the 49ers have the 31st overall pick in the first round. They have five more picks after that in the draft. That's pretty good, right?

Well, the next of those picks is in the fifth round. That's right, San Francisco has two picks in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Even if they traded all those picks, they wouldn't move up much. Which means they would need to actually dip into future drafts for higher picks to trade.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but suddenly the 49ers would be in a bad spot. They'd have very few draft picks in 2020, and would be setting themselves up to have just a few in upcoming drafts as well.

That's not a winning recipe. The draft is a perfect time for teams to rebuild and retool without spending all that much money.

If San Francisco continues to trade away all their draft picks, it's going to severely limit what they can do in the future.

The 49ers clearly are close to having the perfect recipe for a Super Bowl. You could argue trading up could get them that final piece.

However, you could also argue they could still make a big addition at 31. And the future picks could help them incredibly.

Consider this, the 49ers currently have barely $12,000,000 in cap space. Soon they'll need to give players like Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Mike McGlinchey and (of course) George Kittle a ton of money.

They won't have the money for everyone, and will likely have to let someone walk. Having more draft picks will help save them as they can replace some players with much cheaper, younger options.

That means they could have more growing stars on their hands, while also having more potential replacements for some players, that they can then cut, saving up more money to pay the big names.

San Francisco is in a good place when it comes to contending. The cap could brutalize them though. Trading away cheap draft picks seems like a bad move.
