Dwight Howard is the newest Philadelphia 76er and he's coming into the organization with a ton of experience and success. After finally getting his first NBA ring with the Los Angeles Lakers this year, he's hoping to bring some of that championship wisdom to the Sixers. And, he's starting with one simple message.
“That would be my message to everybody on the team: What are you willing to give up to get that trophy? Sometimes you got to give up everything. Sometimes your role and what’s required of you [is] to give up the things you want to do the most.” Howard said (via Larry Brown Sports).
Howard is entering his 17th year in the league — this one with the Sixers — and it seems that the Georgia native has experienced all the highs and lows in the NBA. From being the top pick in the 2004 NBA Draft and building a Hall of Fame type career with the Orlando Magic to failing to impress as a starter in his first stint with the Lakers and eventually moving down the depth chart for numerous teams in the league – the center has definitely been through a lot.
Before moving to the Sixers, Howard came back to the Lakers last season and had to accept his role as a reserve which eventually worked wonders for both him and the Purple & Gold as they won it all this year and brought home the franchise's 17th banner.
On paper, the Sixers have had a championship caliber team for a few seasons now but somehow, things haven't really gone their way. With a talented young core built around Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, Howard is hoping to bring the same intensity and energy on and off the court to help this Philly squad go over the hump and finally taste postseason success.
