Rudy Gay's basketball career is only one facet of who he is. The San Antonio Spurs forward has been giving back to his community dating back to his early days in the NBA. According to Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News, Gay has been making his hometown of Baltimore proud with all the charitable work he is doing for the city.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh told Orsborn:

“He’s been giving back since he entered the NBA, and you just can’t overstate the impact he’s had on so many people in Baltimore, the city that nurtured him and made him who he is today.”

This is high praise from the highest office in the city and it speaks to the profound impact that Gay has had on his hometown.

Gay helps disadvantaged youths in his community through his Flight 22 program. It's intended to reach the people in the community who are at risk and help kids avoid resorting to a life of crime. Gay hopes that through his outreach program, he can help cut down on crime in Charm City. Gay told Orsborn:

“You grow up wanting things, but there is not an easy way to get those things,” he said. “A lot of people resort to illegal ways to do it, but if we teach kids a work ethic and give them business skills to be productive in society, I believe crime will go down.”

It's always uplifting to hear stories about athletes that take pride in giving back to their community. Gay is no exception.
