Stephen A. Smith is known for making bold statements and calling teams out. That was the case once again when he took aim at the Green Bay Packers for the way that they are handling Aaron Rodgers' prime.

According to Smith on ESPN via the International Business Times, the Packers are wasting Rodgers' prime.

“The issue with the Green Bay Packers is Mike McCarthy. It's time that we look at Mike McCarthy and ask ourselves this question — you have the greatest quarterback, I'm talking about from a talent perspective, clearly of this generation, and it's wasting away the greatest years of Aaron Rodgers' career because of a) the inability of [team president] Mark Murphy and those guys to put the requisite pieces around him and b) for Mike McCarthy to coach them.”

Those same sentiments have been echoed by many Packers' fans over the past few years. Rodgers isn't getting any younger and 34 years old only has one Super Bowl title. He also only has one Super Bowl appearance.

Green Bay has quite arguably the best quarterback in league history leading the way. Not putting the necessary pieces around him is simply unforgivable.

New general manager Brian Gutekunst has been much more aggressive than Ted Thompson was. He went out and signed tight end Jimmy Graham, but released Jordy Nelson. Gutekunst has also signed Muhammad Wilkerson and Bashaud Breeland, although Wilkerson went down with a season-ending injury.

Rodgers only has a few years left in his prime. If the Packers are going to win another Super Bowl, they need to begin realizing that fact. Green Bay needs to pay whatever it takes to bring in a supporting cast around Rodgers that can not only protect the star quarterback, but also help him take the time to another title.

Expect to continue hearing these kinds of statements from big names in the media as long as the Packers continue playing in mediocrity. McCarthy's seat is getting hotter and the Packers may have some big decisions to make next offseason.
