The Phoenix Suns agreed to a contract with free agent guard and former first-round selection Cameron Payne on Tuesday, per The Athletic's Shams Charania. The addition came on the last day of the NBA's week-long “transaction window” ahead of the season restart at the end of July in Orlando, Florida.
Phoenix was one of 22 franchises invited to Walt Disney World in Florida to play the remainder of what will be a shortened 2019-20 season before heading into the playoffs. According to Charania, Payne, a 25-year-old point guard who last played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, signed a two-year deal with the Suns.

Payne was the 14th overall selection in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder, later playing with the Chicago Bulls across three seasons before getting waived and signing with the Cavs. Payne later signed a deal with the Toronto Raptors during the summer of 2019 but was waived by the reigning champions prior to the start of this ongoing season.
The deal with the Suns is likely a non-guaranteed contract to stick with the desert franchise into the 2020-21 season. Many teams have used the NBA's June transaction window to make several lower roster decisions, such as the New York Knicks signing free agent guard Jared Harper. Harper, a G Leaguer in the Suns' organization, became a free agent when Phoenix waived the Auburn product a few days into the league hiatus. These moves allow teams to agreed to deals with players who may stay with the organizations into preseason and training camp next season.
Payne has averaged 6.0 points and 2.5 assists per game in his four-plus-year NBA tenure across three franchises. He joins a Suns team six games back from clinching the last spot in the Western Conference playoffs as the league restarts in central Florida at the end of July.
