Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson hosted a gathering of teammates to celebrate the grand opening of his new restaurant on Tuesday, and the occasion seems to have been in direct violation of COVID-19 health and safety protocol.

According to ESPN's Sarah Barshop, at least six Texans players — including Watson, Tytus Howard, Duke Johnson, Laremy Tunsil, Roderick Johnson, and Brandin Cooks — were photographed at Lefty's, a cheesesteak joint that Watson holds a minority ownership stake in.

The NFL's COVID-19 protocols state that, in the case of “Group Activity Outside of the Club Facility a. Groups of more than three (3) Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 Individuals, including players, are prohibited from gathering outside of the Club facility or team travel.”

A spokesperson for the NFL said they were looking into the matter.

When asked about the gathering, Deshaun Watson claimed that everybody followed protocols.

“I mean, we had the masks,” the QB said. “We did everything that we were supposed to do. Six feet from different people. It was a restaurant opening. It wasn't really an event. It was a grand opening of my restaurant. So people were coming in to get food and things like that and everyone was excited about it. So, it turned out pretty good, and right now from the messages I got from after, it's still popping.”

However, the photos clearly show that the attendants in Watson's restaurant were not masked nor distancing for the extent of the gathering.

At the moment, the state of Texas allows restaurants to be open to 75% capacity. Gov. Greg Abbott issued an order requiring parties to remain six feet apart from one another at all times.
