The Houston Texans fear that offensive lineman David Steinmetz has suffered a broken ankle, according to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle.

Steinmetz was carted off of the field at practice with an air cast on his lower right leg and is undergoing further tests to confirm the diagnosis. Should it be officially revealed that Steinmetz did, in fact break his ankle, he would likely be out for the year.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Rhode Island, went undrafted but eventually landed with the Miami Dolphins last year. However, he was released by the team before the 2018 campaign began.

The Texans then signed Steinmetz to their practice squad this past November.

Steinmetz wasn't expected to be anything more than a depth piece along Houston's offensive line heading into 2019.

The Texans are coming off of a season in which they won 11 games and captured the AFC South division title, marking their third division crown in four years.

But, Houston's stay in the playoffs was brief, as the Texans were eliminated by the Indianapolis Colts in the Wild Card Round.

Since becoming an NFL franchise back in 20002, Houston is yet to make it past the Divisional Round.

But with Deshaun Watson under center, a receiving corps that has a lot of promise and an impressive defense that allowed just 19.8 points per game this past year, the Texans are considered by many to be legitimate contenders, even in the deep AFC.

Houston will play its third preseason game this Saturday when it takes on the Dallas Cowboys.
