The Houston Texans hope to re-sign safety Tyrann Mathieu this offseason, according to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle. Wilson states that nothing is imminent but that Mathieu figures to receive a “highly competitive” salary.

Mathieu just played out a one-year, $7 million deal with the Texans in which he played in all 16 games and racked up 89 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and eight passes defended.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at LSU, was originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round (69th pick overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.

He appeared in 13 contests during his rookie campaign, finishing with 68 tackles, a sack, a couple of picks, a forced fumble and nine passes defended.

The following year, Mathieu played in 13 games and totaled 39 stops, an interception and a fumble recovery. He then broke out in 2015, registering 89 tackles, a sack, five picks, a forced fumble, 17 passes defended and a defensive touchdown en route to a Pro Bowl appearance and a First-Team All-Pro selection.

He ended up spending two more seasons with the Cardinals but was cut in March 2018 after he refused to take a paycut.

Houston then jumped at the opportunity to add Mathieu, signing him just five days after Arizona parted ways with the defensive back.

The Texans are coming off of a season in which they won 11 games and captured the AFC South division title.

However, they then went on to lose to the Indianapolis Colts in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.
