Houston Texans star defensive end J.J. Watt made his preseason debut against the Los Angeles Rams, which was a significant moment for him. It was his first game back since suffering a broken leg back in October of last year, which prematurely ended his season.

Watt joked that he liked the fact that he was able to come off the field under his own power against the Rams and downplayed the emotional weight of his return. He also added that getting back on the field and playing again “felt good.”

“It felt good,” Watt said per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. “It's nice to get back out there and have the whole defense out there flying around. It's fun. It's football. It's where I feel the most natural. It's where I feel the most at home.”

It’s been a rough couple of seasons for Watt, who has played just eight games during that time due to leg and back problems. It’s fair to wonder whether the three-time Defensive Player of the Year will ever be able to reach that elite level again following those serious injuries.

But Watt certainly believes he’s still capable of doing so. As do the oddsmakers, who have Watt installed as the odds-on favorite to win the award for the fourth time this year.

Only time will tell if Watt actually does accomplish that remarkable feat. But in getting back on the field, Watt has at least made another important step toward making that scenario a reality.
