Arch Manning shocked the college football world last month when he announced his commitment to the University of Texas at Austin. Manning, a nephew of former Super Bowl winners Eli and Peyton Manning, garnered interest from SEC powerhouses such as Alabama and Georgia, but in the end, he opted to verbally commit to the soon-to-be former Big 12 school.

Much has already been speculated over just how Texas will plan to welcome Manning in for the 2023 season. According to former Longhorns quarterback Vince Young, head coach Steve Sarkisian will opt to redshirt the No. 1 ranked recruit in next year’s class.

Speaking to Keyshawn Johnson on ESPN’s “First Take” program, Young revealed that he has been “hearing” that Manning is expected to sit out the entirety of the 2023 campaign.

“I really feel like Arch has a great opportunity,” Young said. “One of the things that I’m hearing is that he is going to redshirt. That’s going to help out a lot, so you can understand how to travel with the team. Get the feel of the fans. … So, when you have those types of things and you take a year off like when I played with Coach [Mack] Brown, I redshirted.

“And I feel like that redshirt year helped me understand how to be a quarterback at the University of Texas. And then what you go through. Traveling and things like that. So, if he does that, I really feel like it’s going to be good for him to sit back, and kind of learn and also get familiar with the offense and stuff like that.”

As Young touched on, he redshirted his freshman year at Texas. He wound up being named the Longhorns' starting quarterback for the 2003 season, and the rest was history. He capped off his run at Texas with 81 total touchdowns, which included 26 passing touchdowns in the Longhorns’ 2005 national title-winning run.

For now, Texas is slated to call upon either Quinn Ewers or Hudson Card to start at quarterback for its upcoming season opener against Louisiana-Monroe. On the other hand, Manning will lead Newman High School in New Orleans, Louisiana for its varsity football campaign later this year. He tallied 72 passing touchdowns in his first three years of high school football.
