If you are a connoisseur of the NFL Draft and you are a fan of the Los Angeles Rams, you may have some bad news coming your way – at this point in time, their collection of picks for the 2022 NFL Draft is quite barren, but for good reason.

Without considering their pending compensatory selections, the team only has three selections – their own ‘22 5th and 7th round picks, as well as a 7th rounder from the Miami Dolphins. They acquired this selection from the Dolphins in 2019 when they sent CB Aqib Talib and a 2020 5th round selection (from Baltimore) in return for MIA’s ‘22 7th.

Here is a quick rundown as to why they have so few of their own selections for next year’s draft.

1st Round

This pick, along with their 2021 3rd round and 2023 1st round pick, as well as quarterback Jared Goff, were sent to Detroit in return for QB Matthew Stafford, who has had nothing short of a career renaissance in his first season with the Rams.

While giving up two first-round selections for a signal-caller on the wrong side of 30 certainly can be a shot in the dark, it looks like Stafford just needed a change of scenery to regain the type of All-Pro play he has demonstrated in the past.

2nd & 3rd Rounds

LAR’s 2nd and 3rd round selections were packaged together this past week and traded to Denver for linebacker Von Miller, helping the defensively rich get even richer.

As the 32-year-old LB suits up for the second team in his career, the Rams won the bidding war that was rumored to have also included the Bills and Cowboys, so the eight-time Pro Bowl player was a coveted option at this year’s trade deadline.

4th Round

Back in 2020, the Rams were looking to ship out wide receiver Brandin Cooks, who was a member of the team’s WR core alongside Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods. As the odd man out, Cooks was ultimately traded, along with LAR’s ‘22 4th rounder, to the Houston Texans for HOU’s 2020 2nd round selection.

Cooks, who was a hot name being floated around this year’s trade deadline himself, is one of only a handful of meaningful players left for the Texans, and while he certainly has been this team’s lone offensive playmaker with Deshaun Watson not suiting due to an ongoing legal situation, he would not have been utilized much if still with the Rams.

6th Round

This selection was traded to the New England Patriots, along with their 2023 4th rounder for RB Sony Michel in the wake of losing Cam Akers to a season-ending injury.

Michel has since taken a backseat behind Darrell Henderson, but he did put up solid stats when Henderson was forced to miss time due to injury.

Compensatory Picks

The Rams are slated to receive a league-high five compensatory selections for the ‘22 draft – the max of four for players that departed in free agency and one for a front-office member that became DET’s new GM.

Brad Holmes, who was the Director of College Scouting for the Rams, will likely net LA a third-round selection.

The Cleveland Browns decidedly liked the secondary that the Rams had last season, as they signed safety John Johnson III and cornerback Troy Hill last offseason, helping the Rams earn a 4th (for Johnson) and a 6th (for Hill) for next year.

Two more sixth-round selections are likely coming LAR’s way, as linebacker Samson Ebukam (49ers) and tight end Gerald Everett (Seahawks) both departed last offseason and will help the Rams rebuild their lacking war chest of draft picks.
