When it comes to The Righteous Gemstones, going to church has never been crazier. In a few weeks' time, though, fans of the beloved series on Max will finally get to see the latest season of Eli Gemstone and his kids – Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin – go back to their insane way of running the family business. But before that happens, here's what you must know about The Righteous Gemstones season 3.

Everything you need to know before The Righteous Gemstones season 3 drops on Max

4. What happened in The Righteous Gemstones seasons 1 and 2

Back in The Righteous Gemstones season 1, viewers were introduced to Eli, an aging pastor leading a megachurch, and his three children – Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin. The 10-episode run revolved mostly around Gideon, his effort to rob the church, and a subsequent change of heart towards his family. Along the way, fans were also introduced to other subplots, such as Old Baby Billy trying to supplant Eli and Judy's battle to be recognized. In the end, the Gemstones unite as one to tackle all of these threats and come out stronger, both as a family and as a church.

Although the good vibes were initially carried over to the start of The Righteous Gemstones season 2, it won't last long as the Gemstone kids each deal with their respective story arcs. Kelvin struggled to find meaning and purpose via his God Squad, a group of bodybuilders he leads for most of the season. Judy started out with a larger role in the church and eventually became close to Tiffany. For his part, Jesse got involved with the Lissons as their partnership aimed to build a high-end Christian-based hotel resort.

Encompassing all of these arcs in The Righteous Gemstones season 2 are Eli's past catching up with him and a journalist's murder tying all of the main characters together. Eventually, the Gemstones get to the bottom of these mysteries and end up taking sole possession of the hotel resort. The second season ends with Eli moving on with his family from all of their secrets, stronger than ever.

3. Taking over the family business

In the trailer for The Righteous Gemstones season 3, we see Eli taking a step back from leading his church and handing the reins to his children. Jesse, in particular, is in charge of the weekly service, although it looks like there'll be disappointing results up ahead. It also seems that the goodwill generated by the ending of The Righteous Gemstones season 2 will carry over to the whole family, that is, until the new challenges come along.

With declining attendance numbers and the danger of rich benefactors leaving the church, it looks like the Gemstone kids have to figure out how to bring the momentum back in their family's favor. Unfortunately, that won't be the case as a new player enters the scene.

As seen in The Righteous Gemstones season 3 trailer from Max, Eli the kids will be dealing with the Brothers of Tomorrow's Fires, a militia-church hybrid organization led by the Montgomerys. The unnamed leader, played by Steve Zahn, is going to play a recurring part in the upcoming season. As compared to the Gemstones' luxurious lifestyle, the Montgomerys are leading a bunch of gun-totting individuals with a belief leaning towards the end of times. And while details of this storyline are still sparse, it's expected that the Brothers will certainly clash with the Gemstones at some point in season 3.

1. The Righteous Gemstones Release date
