Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler doesn't have too much respect for Andrew Wiggins and believes the Canadian swingman plays for the money instead of the love of the game, ESPN insider Stephen A. Smith said on Thursday's edition of “First Take.”
Butler, who has reportedly requested a trade from the Timberwolves, has issues with Wiggins' work ethic, approach on defense, and lack of heart.
Butler reportedly prefers to play for the L.A. Clippers but also has the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets on his wishlist. The four-time All-Star wants to play for a franchise which will allow him to recruit other star players.
A report came out Wednesday claiming Butler's trade request had nothing to do with Wiggins or Karl-Anthony Towns, the other player believed whom Butler has a problem with in Minnesota. But it's fair to say we can squash that after what transpired late Wednesday evening.
Nick Wiggins, the brother of Andrew, tweeted “Hallelujah” when the news broke Butler had demanded a trade. Butler quickly responded, posting a video to his Instagram page with the caption, “Hallelujah.” The swingman also said, “Keep that same energy.”
Wiggins re-signed with the Timberwolves in the summer of 2017 on a five-year deal worth in excess of $146 million. He's one of the most young talented players in the league, but there were many instances last season where it looked like Wiggins was going through the motions and not fully engaged on the court. That's not going to fly around Jimmy Butler, who is a rugged player and one of the hardest workers in the game.
The Timberwolves conduct their media day on September 24. It would be a shock to many if Butler is still on the team considering all the events which have occurred since he asked to be traded.
