Even after Karl-Anthony Towns signed a five-year supermax extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2018, nobody seemed absolutely convinced that the All-Star center was truly committed to the Twin Cities long-term, especially considering the state of star player movement in the modern NBA.

Karl-Anthony Towns stressed his “recommitment” to the Wolves at the time, implicitly acknowledging that he had already wavered on his future in Minnesota.

“I made a recommitment to the Wolves and have the same feelings of excitement that I felt back in 2015,” he stated upon signing the extension. “I promise to the fans, my teammates and the organization to keep the vision of the man who drafted me, Flip Saunders, alive and treat his dream of winning with respect and dignity.”

Despite Towns' actions, doubts remained about his intentions to stick around Minnesota. That was, until the team traded Andrew Wiggins to the Golden State Warriors in February for and acquired one of Karl-Anthony Towns' best friends, point guard D'Angelo Russell.

However, according to Darren Wolfson of SKOR North, a player who knows Karl-Anthony Towns well supposedly told an agent recently that the star is “as good as gone” from the franchise that drafted him with the No. 1 overall pick in 2015.

“So I reached out to this particular agent … unsolicited, the agent texted me back … he goes … ‘I'm in Southern California the other day, I run into somebody that knows Karl Anthony-Towns incredibly well — let's just say a really good player that knows KAT really, really well … The agent said, ‘this player told him, that KAT is ‘as good as gone.'”

The reporter didn't speculate that the Wolves will trade Karl-Anthony Towns anytime soon, but the anecdote can't make the Timberwolves brass — nor Russell — feel too comfortable.

Towns is under contract with the Timberwolves through the 2023-24 season.
