Titans QB Marcus Mariota is playing the role of Lamar Jackson in practice
The Tennessee Titans know full well they are going to have their work cut out trying to contain Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. Fortunately, they are one of the few teams with the means of preparation thanks to quarterback Marcus Mariota’s skill set.
Jackson has established himself as the NFL’s premier dual-threat under center. Head coach Mike Vrabel is using Mariota to help give the defense a proper look at what to expect, via Jim Wyatt of the team’s official website.
“Hopefully, we could get that speed and get that look as close to what we are going to see. In the game it won’t be the same, but I think it’s going to be pretty good with what Marcus can do.”
Vrabel’s approach is certainly understandable considering the challenge that lies ahead in the AFC Divisional Round. Although Mariota is in the midst of a disappointing 2019 NFL season after being replaced as the starter, he is still doing what he can to help Tennessee win games.
It is safe to say that Mariota might be one of the few quarterbacks that are over-qualified to play such a role in practice. After all, he won the Heisman Trophy and was a former No. 2 overall pick thanks to his prowess as a passer as well as a runner. The Titans are now set to square off against an MVP version of that in the form of Jackson.
Regardless, getting a good look now could help pay huge dividends for the Titans in the next round.
