The NFL and NFLPA are looking into whether Tennessee Titans players conducted an improper off-site workout as part of its broader investigation into the team's COVID-19 outbreak.

According to Mark Maske and Sidney Boren of the Washington Post, “the league and union have not verified whether that occurred…but if that is substantiated, it could form the basis for punishment of the team.”

The league had previously told the Titans that they could not hold group workouts away from the team facility.

The NFL has been forced to reckon with its COVID-19 protocols in the wake of a slew of positive tests. The Titans had 18 personnel members test positive last week over a six-day stretch that seemed to end on Sunday. The outbreak prompted the investigation, postponed their matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers to Week 7, and caused NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to issue a memo on Monday to the league's 32 clubs reinforcing the protective measures in place and threatening discipline.

The league has not allowed the Titans to reopen their facility since it closed last week, though two more Titans players tested positive on Wednesday. Now, the status of their Week 5 matchup against the Buffalo Bills is up in the air.

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel has insisted the organization complied with the league's health and safety measures. Goodell said teams could possibly be forced to forfeit games or lose draft picks for breaking the rules.

Also on Wednesday, New England Patriots star cornerback Stephon Gilmore tested positive for COVID-19, days after his teammate, quarterback Cam Newton, contracted the virus. Maurice Hurst of the Las Vegas Raiders was revealed to have tested positive, too.
