Along with running back Dion Lewis, the Tennessee Titans released five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Cameron Wake, the team announced, on Thursday ahead of—so long as planned—Monday's start to the NFL's free agency.

The 38-year-old veteran defensive player signed a three-year, $23 million contract with the Titans in March of last year. Wake, an 11-year edge rusher in the NFL, only appeared in nine games for the AFC Championship Finalist club, landing on the injured reserve in Nov. 2019.

Wake spent the first 10 years of his NFL tenure with the Miami Dolphins, who signed the former undrafted free agent from Penn State in 2009 after he was signed and released by the New York Giants in 2005 and later competed for the BC Lions in the CFL. Wake capitalized on his second chance in the NFL with the Dolphins en route to five Pro Bowl selections and turning into one of the most dominant edge rushers. Wake led the league in tackles for losses, with 21, in his sophomore campaign with the Fins.

The Titans, however, only saw a small part of Wake's once-dominant game, taking on the then-37-year-old who was past his prime, unfortunately. In nine games with Tennessee, Wake recorded three solo tackles and 11 quarterback hits. Releasing Wake is largely a salary cap maneuver for the AFC South team that surprised the NFL in the postseason earlier this January 2020.

Per Pro Football Talk, the Titans cutting Wake saves the team a hair under $6 million next year, and combined with Lewis' release totals to $10 million ahead of what could be a free agency splurge for future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady—or much more likely locking up Comeback Player of the Year gunslinger Ryan Tannehill.
