The Tennessee Titans announced they have released Adoree' Jackson.

The move came as somewhat of a surprise, considering the Titans picked up Jackson's fifth-year option last year — an offer that Tennessee can now rescind. Jackson's option was worth $10.2 million, money that now will be converted into salary cap space.

As ESPN's Dan Graziano notes, Jackson is a member of the last draft class (2017) whose fifth-year options can be rescinded in a similar fashion. The most recent collective bargaining agreement stipulates that fifth-year options will now be fully guaranteed if picked up.

The Titans selected the USC star with the no. 18 overall pick in the draft.

The 25-year old defensive back started 39 games over his first three seasons before being limited to three games in 2020 due to a knee injury. Jackson racked up 200 total tackles, two interceptions, and 601 kick/punt return yards during his tenure in Tennessee.

Jackson's now-former secondary-mate, Titans safety Kevin Byard, didn't seem too thrilled by the announcement:

Jackson was Pro Football Focus’ no. 8 ranked cornerback in 2019.

Despite the recent knee troubles, Jackson should have plenty of suitors on the open market, though the salary cap has been lowered by about $16 million.

Tennessee released veteran CB Malcolm Butler earlier this offseason, too.

The Titans also announced the release of offensive lineman Dennis Kelly, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Kelly slid to right tackle in the 2020 season and performed adequately in a larger role.

By cutting Jackson and Kelly, Tennessee will free up roughly $17 million in cap room, leaving the organization with about $30 million to spend.
