The massive main event scheduled for UFC 295 on Nov. 11 has been cancelled. Heavyweight champion Jon Jones suffered a pectoral injury while wrestling and is forced to drop out of the bout versus Stipe Miocic, per ESPN MMA. Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich will battle it out for the interim title, with Miocic being completely removed from the card.

The utter pandemonium that was due to invade Madison Square Garden will surely be much more tempered now that fans will be deprived of seeing two absolute legends duke it out in the Octagon. UFC president and CEO Dana White broke the bad news.

“Jon Jones was training last night, got injured, he was wrestling and he tore the tendon that connects your {{pectoral} to the bone off the bone,” he said, via munchnews. “Eight months {recovery}, going to need surgery.”

Ouch. This is a gut-wrenching blow for all involved, especially given that the title fight was just weeks away. Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira's bout for the vacant light heavyweight championship is replacing Jones versus Miocic as the new main event.

UFC is fortunate to have another buzz-worthy match to slot in following this abrupt change of plans, but it will nevertheless be difficult for fans to accept. Especially for those who will be in MSG. Jon Jones returned in March after a three-year hiatus from the sport and defeated Ciryl Gane via submission to claim the heavyweight belt. It was a big moment that solidified his status as an unquestioned all-time great.

At 41 years of age, Stipe Miocic is not going to have many more opportunities to ascend back to top of the mountain. It is unclear where Jones' injury leaves him, but perhaps he could challenge for the interim championship in the near future. There are many fans who desperately hope to see these two titans collide in 2024.
