Things did not go smoothly for Derrick Lewis the last time he fought in Houston. He took on Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title at UFC 265 in August.
The Houston native admitted the pressure got to him and he wouldn't let that happen again. He also revealed why his fight at UFC 265 brought so much pressure.
“The reason why the pressure was so tough for that fight right there was because it was the same day, exact day, that I got out of prison,” Lewis explained Wednesday at UFC 271 media day, via MMAJunkie. “So, it’s like I put a lot of pressure on myself, and it was just like a crazy, crazy thing that I wanted for my legacy or whatever. Being all the way at the bottom of my life then being the champion of the world would have just meant a lot at that time.”

Derrick Lewis is set to meet Tai Tuivasa in the co-main event of UFC 271. The bout is expected to be very exciting and the two have very fun fighting styles.
Tai Tuivasa revealed last week that he was drunk when he accepted to fight Derrick Lewis at UFC 271. Lewis admits he's made some mistakes himself while being drunk, he also took it as an opportunity to fire some subtle shots at his opponent.
“I did a lot of things whenever I wasn’t sober, agreed to and did, and regretted it later,” Lewis said. “It is what it is. … I did a lot of stupid stuff in my life, and I continued doing what I’m trying to learn from.”
