Case Cookus was having the game of his life in the USFL Championship game. The Philadelphia Stars quarterback has looked like a star in leading his team against the Baltimore Stallions. Unfortunately for him, his Cinderella story came to a brutal end rather abruptly.
During the final quarter of the USFL Finals against the Stallions, Case Cookus went down with an apparent leg injury. It was a terrible sight to see, especially for someone like Cookus, who was balling out for the team the entire time. Cookus was carted off the field, but not before getting a well-deserved ovation from the crowd.
The injury ended up mattering more than the Stars would’ve liked in the championship game. After Cookus’ injury, the Stallions roared back from a three-point deficit to win the USFL title. What could’ve been the franchise’s first championship in the re-formed league immediately turned into a tragic tale for them.
Despite that, though, Cookus definitely turned some heads with his impressive play in the USFL finals. Some fans are already speculating that the Stars QB could be picked up by an NFL team as a backup quarterback. That would be the perfect ending to Cookus’ incredible season… assuming he’s reasonably healthy after this injury.
All things considered, the rebirth of the USFL could be considered a massive success. There were some rough times, but the league held on and were able to deliver an entertaining product in Year 1. It will be interesting to see how they develop things from here on out.
