New Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant reportedly felt like he would always be second in place to his three-year running mate Stephen Curry on the Golden State Warriors, apparently feeling like a “distant second fiddle” during his time in the Bay Area.

According to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated, that was among the reasons the two-time Finals MVP chose to part ways with the Warriors.

“While Durant’s shocking move to join the Warriors in 2016 quickly paid dividends for him — two straight championships and two Finals MVP awards — there was always the sense that the 10-time All-Star felt like a distant second fiddle to Stephen Curry. The love for Curry in the Bay Area certainly was understandable as he was a homegrown draft pick in 2009 and the face of the franchise.”

This was also highly speculated to be the reason for his potential departure throughout the course of the regular season, but one that also wavered, as the two were good friends and teammates during their three-year stint in the Bay.

The narrative of Durant's pursuit of his own team quickly came to a close after reports of a potential union with Kyrie Irving came along, bolstering what would be his burden to carry to a three-player friendship deal that included DeAndre Jordan coming in as the third musketeer.

It's unknown if Durant will ever reconcile that feeling at some point in his career, but that feeling of being the second fiddle might have marked his exit before he even thought about finding a new home.
