One of the most emotional bits of ESPN's recently-concluded hit docuseries “The Last Dance” featured former Chicago Bulls guard and current Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and the story behind the murder of his father.

In the series, Kerr narrated how his father was killed in Beirut, Lebanon as part of a political war that was going on in the country back then. The show featured some rare clips of Malcolm H. Kerr days before his murder, and as it turned out, this was actually something Steve and the rest of his family had seen for the first time ever.

“I had emails from my siblings, they hadn’t seen, nor had I, the footage of our dad speaking when they showed him being interviewed on campus in Beirut,” Kerr said in an interview on KNBR 680 radio, via Ali Thanawalla of NBC Sports,   We had never seen that footage, so to hear his voice and see him like that was pretty emotional. These guys who are doing the documentary are people who look back at these stories, they have access to stuff we don’t know about. So we are able to see and read things that we had never seen before.”

“The Last Dance” revealed a lot of insider knowledge about Michael Jordan and the Bulls — some of which most of us have never heard before. Apparently, the show had the same effect on the Kerr family, only from a much more personal standpoint. Surely it was painful for them to relive that tragedy, but seeing their father in his element likely presented itself as a pleasant surprise to the family as well.
