Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is not happy with what he believes was a “dirty” play from Dillon Brooks that injured Gary Payton II.

Early in the first quarter of the game, Payton found himself with a clear path to the basket. Instead of letting the Warriors guard get the easy two, however, the Memphis Grizzlies swingman decided to hit him on the head.

Payton landed awkwardly and injured his left elbow in the process. Brooks was then assessed with a Flagrant 2 and ejected, but the damage has been done with the Young Glove heading to the locker room to get his injury checked.

After the first quarter, Kerr expressed his dismay over the play. The Warriors knew the Grizzlies would be physical in the game, but for him, the hit goes beyond just that.

“That wasn’t physical, that was dirty,” Kerr said.

To be fair, it was indeed an unnecessary play. It's hard to blame Steve Kerr for calling it dirty since Dillon Brooks really had no need to block the shot since he was a step too late. He wasn't even in the way of Gary Payton II.

Payton has been ruled out for the rest of the game due to the elbow injury. His status for their upcoming games is still unknown.

The incident should only increase the animosity between the two teams and intensify the matchup even more. Hopefully, though, there will no longer be any injury caused by unnecessary and excessive cheap shots.
