The Golden State Warriors have thrived using their small ball lineup, but there is no denying they have a gaping hole at center with their lack of big man. Interestingly, they could address that problem in the offseason with a potential push for Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert.
Speaking on his Hoop Collective podcast on ESPN, Brian Windhorst discussed the recent rumor about the Warriors trading for Gobert from the Jazz. While the NBA insider doesn't think the Dubs are the frontrunners to land the Frenchman, he admitted that it's a possibility.
Windhorst also theorized that should the Warriors really push for the move, it'll likely be centered around Andrew Wiggins and the young players they have.
“I have heard that rumor out there… I guess it would be based around Andrew Wiggins… I don’t know. If the Warriors win the title I don’t know if they’re looking for a major shake-up. But the Warriors don’t have that big and they have young players and they have the Wiggins contract. … I don’t think they should be considered a leader but I think that’s on the board. I’ve definitely heard that,” Windhorst said, via Hoops Hype.
The Warriors have the likes of Kevon Looney and the injured James Wiseman as their big men, but it makes sense if they really want to trade for Rudy Gobert. With just a few years left in the primes of their core trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, they would want to be competing for the title throughout the time they have.
Adding Gobert to a championship roster should catapult Golden State to title favorites once again. Not only do they get an elite center, but they also fortify heir defense further with a three-time Defensive Player of the Year winner. There has been talks about the Jazz possibly blowing up the roster after years of failure, so Gobert being made available is quite high.
It remains to be seen if the Warriors will actually do it, but it's definitely an interesting prospect worth keeping an eye on.
