After the Cleveland Browns selected Myles Garrett with the first pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears elected to swap picks with the San Francisco 49ers so the team could obtain its hopeful franchise quarterback: Mitchell Trubisky.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs swapped picks with the Buffalo Bills in order to take Patrick Mahomes, a gunslinger from Texas Tech.

Since then Mahomes is an MVP winner and leader of one of the most electric offenses in NFL history — while Trubisky poses many questions going into his fourth season in 2020.

Trubisky holds a winning record as the Bears' starting quarterback at 22-17, but Mahomes has a 22-7 record. Trubisky has 8,190 passing yards along with 48 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. Mahomes has 8,987 passing yards with 73 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

While there is no question that Mahomes is one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL, the same can't be said for Trubisky. Under his first season with former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Trubisky threw for 3,223 yards, 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The season led the Bears to a playoff berth and left many with positive impressions of Trubisky's future.

But this season is proving be a difficult one for Trubisky. The third-year quarterback has thrown for just 2,774 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Trubisky seems to be struggling in his second season under Nagy, or it could be that NFL teams are beginning to figure out Trubisky and a game plan.

But what if the Bears took Mahomes instead of Trubisky? While it's hard to imagine what could have been and hindsight is always 20/20, but it wouldn't seem out of the ordinary if the Bears would have made a Super Bowl right with Mahomes under center.

With Mahomes and a solid defense, Chicago could be one of the best teams in the NFC and entire league.

Chiacgo put an incredible amount of assets on the table to move one spot to take Trubisky, and looking back the move looks okay. Trubisky isn't a game changer or as electric as Mahomes, but time could be on his side. It's hard to remember that Trubisky only had a small sample size in college.

But Bears fans can look back at the 2017 NFL Draft and wonder what could've been. Many players who have proven their worth in the NFL could have been taken by Chicago, including Mahomes, Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, and Carolina Panthers Christian McCaffrey.

There is still plenty of time for Trubisky to make his name in the league, but time goes quick in a results-based league.
