It seems fair to say that current Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani will not be heading to the Jerry Reinsdorf-owned Chicago White Sox when he gets to free agency this offseason. But it seems like a fine probably will be after comments Reinsdorf made on Thursday.

The issue stems from Reinsdorf making it clear that his new general manager hire, Chris Getz, would not be involved in any Ohtani bidding this offseason.

Reinsdorf publicly announcing the White Sox would not be signing a specific player violates the CBA, as pointed out by NorthSideBound's Greg Zumach. Considering what a cut-and-dried example this is, it is likely Reinsdorf will be fined by Major League Baseball for his comments.

It's foolish also in the sense that what Reinsdorf plainly stated…probably didn't need to be stated by the White Sox owner at all.

Obviously, no one knows what Shohei Ohtani will do in free agency yet. But heavily rumored to be among his top priorities are two things: he wants to win, and he prefers to remain on the West Coast.

Now, despite being a great city, Chicago is not located on the West Coast. So there is a significant hurdle the South Siders could not clear.

As for the winning part? The White Sox currently sit in fourth in the AL Central, 22.5 games back in the Wild Card race. They traded away their staff ace at the end of July (coincidently to Ohtani's Angels), and cleaned house in the team's front office weeks later. They have won their division once since 2009.

New GM Chris Getz is going to have his hands full returning the White Sox to contender status. But at least he won't have to worry about wooing Shohei Ohtani.
