Maybe it's time Ozzie Guillen stopped going to McDonald's. The former World Series-winning manager and current Chicago White Sox television analyst broke down his fandom for the team amid its worst season in the franchise's 124-year history.

After the White Sox lost their 13th consecutive game on Wednesday to fall to 15-47, Guillen mentioned that he gets heckled by an employee at his local McDonald's when Chicago loses. Apparently, the employee is a Chicago Cubs fan, making matters even worse for Guillen.

“People have to understand, we're not just pregame, postgame analysts. Unfortunately, I'm a White Sox fan. I am,” Guillen said, per Jon Greenberg. “It's a funny thing. I'm getting paid to get hurt. Some people pay to get hurt.”

At least Guillen can find some humor in a dreadful season for the South Siders.

The White Sox lost a two-game set against the Cubs this week at Wrigley Field, blowing leads in both games. After seeing a five-run lead evaporate on Tuesday, the White Sox led Wednesday's game 5-1 before the Cubs roared back for a 7-6 walk-off win.

The White Sox lost five of their last six games against their crosstown rivals. While the Cubs compete for a playoff spot this season, the White Sox are navigating through a year that likely feels much longer than it actually is.

White Sox approaching historically bad levels

After seeing the disaster of the 2023 Oakland Athletics – a team that went 50-112 – it was hard to imagine a team having a worse season in 2024. Insert the White Sox, who've managed to post the sixth-worst 62-game start in MLB history.

Chicago's worst-ever season came in 1932 when the White Sox went 49-102 for a .325 winning percentage. The 2024 White Sox are on pace to shatter that and could even tease breaking the record for the worst season in the modern era.

Chicago is on pace to win 39 games this year which would give them 123 losses and a .240 winning percentage. The worst winning percentage of any MLB team since 1901 belongs to the 1916 Philadephia Athletics who recorded a .235 winning percentage with a 36-117 record.

The 2003 Detroit Tigers hold the worst record in a 162-game season. They won 43 games and finished 47 games out of first place in the AL Central.

Perhaps the White Sox, regardless of their final record this season, can find a silver lining in previous bad teams. The Tigers won 95 games and the American League pennant in 2006, three years after that terrible 2003 season.

There's no way of telling what sort of team the White Sox will have in three years, but it certainly can’t get much worse than the product they've put on the field this year. It seems inevitable that manager Pedro Grifol will be relieved of his duties and he might not make it through the season.

Maybe it's unfair to blame Grifol but something has to change for the White Sox and it doesn’t appear that change will come from the top. Fans have urged owner Jerry Reinsdorf to sell the team but there is no indication that will happen anytime soon.

Chicago is in what seems like a never-ending spiral of mediocrity. It will be a long summer on the South Side of Chicago.
