Washington Wizards point guard Russell Westbrook is looking to take his shoe game to the next level as he debuts the Jordan Why Not Zer0.4 on the floor in the 2020-2021 NBA season.
The nine-time All-Star shared on Twitter that he was able to reflect on the previous events in American society especially regarding the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement in order to make a valuable impact for the next generation of hoopers.
Excited to announce the Why Not Zer0.4 This year it was important to me to reflect on what we all have experienced throughout the year specifically the black community. Being a Black man is something that I cherish & I am always trying to find ways to impact & inspire our youth pic.twitter.com/KOiHhOWxvG

Through the help of Jordan Brand, Westbrook was able to collaborate with BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) artists in order to provide them with a canvas that could help them paint the stories of the Black culture better to everyone else. The chosen artists include Coin Parking Delivery, Chris Burnett, Darien Burks, and Karabo Poppy.
He also chose to integrate a handful of the most important values in his life namely “Upbringing,” “Family” and “Trust & Loyalty” into the colorways of his new sneakers. The artists were then commissioned to envision these virtues using the imagery of Westbrook on the shoes themselves.
The Wizards star then spoke on what it meant for him to use his platform as a means of giving back to his roots and the Black community.
“The African American community is obviously very important to me, and being a Black man in today’s society is something that I cherish and own,” he said via Jordan Brand. “We have to find ways to impact our youth, and tap into whatever it is they do —whether it’s art, sports or medicine. It’s been very inspiring for me to be able to do that through shoes and these artists commissions.”
Russell Westbrook hopes that his latest signature sneaker in the Jordan Why Not Zer0.4 will help inspire the youth from all walks of life to pursue their respective passions and to learn to make their own impact for the years to come.
