The New York Yankees are making a surprising move. The team is bringing up infielder Oswald Peraza to replace Giancarlo Stanton on the roster, per the team's social media. Many fans expected the team to bring up Jasson Dominguez instead to play for the Bronx Bombers.

Stanton is on the 10-day IL for a left hamstring strain. Peraza will get the opportunity to play in his stead, when the team needs him. Peraza batted .178 in Triple-A, per MLB.com. The move means that Aaron Judge could also play more of a designated hitter role on the club, according to that outlet.

The Yankees are struggling, with five losses in the last seven games. Stanton is also the latest player to get injured for the team in the last month. New York did power past the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, with an 8-3 victory.

New York's pitching has let them down in the last few weeks. The team gave up a total of 25 runs in back-to-back losses to Baltimore and Atlanta, heading into Saturday. The team got a win over the Braves Saturday, but unfortunately lost Stanton.

Stanton is batting .246 this season with 18 home runs. He largely plays the designated hitter spot for New York, so Judge will likely slide into that role. Jasson Dominguez was the most likely candidate to replace Stanton on the team, but he has also been hurt recently. Anthony Rizzo is also out with a fractured wrist. The organization is clearly trying to shuffle the deck as much as possible for a winning hand. Time will tell if Peraza can pick up the slack for the club.

Stanton brings a lot to the table for New York, and not just at the plate. He's a veteran who has played in the MLB longer than just about anyone else on the roster. He also has been a reliable cog for the offense. Before getting hurt, he was on a 10-game hitting streak. This season, he has a total of 64 hits. That's near his season total from last year, when he finished with 71.

“Hopefully it's not too significant,” New York manager Aaron Boone said about Stanton's injury after Saturday's game, per CBS Sports. “He just came to me after that and said he needed to come out. So we'll see what we've got.”

New York is 52-27 this season, and trying to stay ahead in the American League East. The club leads that division, but the Baltimore Orioles are very close behind. The Orioles are 1.5 games back, heading into Sunday's action. New York was the first team in MLB to get 50 wins this season, but they have only won four of their last 10 games.

The Yankees face off with the Braves again on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 Eastern.
