The Jacksonville Jaguars enter this offseason in a familiar situation. They always seem to have a ton of cap space, premium picks, and a terrible roster. That's the case again, which means that this offseason is a huge opportunity to turn things around. Jacksonville has over $50 million available to spend, and they've never been shy about making big, splashy signings in the past. That hasn't always worked out, as there's a huge amount of risk associated with big-money signings.

There are a ton of guys that the Jaguars should be wary of as free agency approaches, so here are two players the Jaguars must avoid signing in 2022.

2 Free Agents the Jaguars Must Avoid

2. Marcus Williams

In this instance, Jacksonville shouldn't be concerned with the quality of player. Williams is a fantastic safety, but his presence just isn't necessary on this team.

The Jaguars have a surprisingly good safety duo in Rayshawn Jenkins and Andrew Wingard, with the former being a big signing during the 2021 offseason. Their depth at the position is good too.

Sophomore safety Andre Cisco showed tons of promise last season, and bringing in Williams would only push the promising youngster further down the depth chart. While it's tempting to make a splash by signing a big name like Williams, it would only have detrimental effects for the Jaguars.

Signing a safety isn't out of the question, but there's no way Jacksonville should be looking for a star at the position. They will likely ink a low-level backup just for depth purposes, and there's plenty of options there. Guys like Marcell Harris of the San Francisco 49ers and Damontae Kazee of the Dallas Cowboys both make more sense than a Williams signing. The Jaguars have to resist the temptation of bringing in one of the best players on the free agent market and conserve their cap space for other positions.

1. Kyle Fuller

Kyle Fuller is one of the most underrated players in the NFL, but the Jaguars shouldn't go anywhere near him this offseason. Similarly to Williams, his quality of play isn't a problem. His fit with Jacksonville is.

The Jaguars to need to bring in a cornerback or two this offseason, but they shouldn't be looking to sign starting-caliber players at the position. They just gave a huge deal to Shaquill Griffin last offseason and spent a second-round pick on Tyson Campbell, who steadily improved over the course of the year. Both of those guys are entrenched as starters. That means Fuller would be playing in the slot, a position he hasn't played much during his career.

The Jaguars should also be looking to upgrade their roster in more sustainable ways. Fuller is already 30 years old, and Jacksonville is light years away from playoff contention. By the time the Jaguars are ready to play a meaningful game, Fuller will probably be 33. There's no point in paying big money to an aging player who will take away playing time from developing pieces. The Jaguars should stay far away from Fuller and the rest of the aging cornerbacks during free agency.

There are plenty of good options that the Jaguars will likely pursue over Fuller. A one-year prove-it style deal for Kevin King wouldn't be a bad move. Nik Needham proved himself to be a solid slot defender in his time with the Miami Dolphins, and he's only 25. These aren't exciting moves, but they would help build depth at one of the most important positions on the field.
