The Chicago Bears have reportedly placed wide receiver Chase Claypool on the Physically Unable to Perform list as training camp starts, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles traded a second-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for Chase Claypool ahead of the trade deadline in 2022, and the hope was that he would be a solid weapon for young quarterback Justin Fields. He has yet to provide that, as he had 311 receiving yards and one touchdown with the Bears last season in eight games.

Claypool starting training camp on the PUP list means that DJ Moore and Darnell Mooney will be the top wideouts for the team in the opening practices. It would be beneficial for Claypool to get off of the PUP list as soon as possible so he can build chemistry with Justin Fields.

DJ Moore was a big offseason addition for the Bears, as they acquired him in the trade that sent the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers selected Bryce Young with that pick. So instead of drafting a new quarterback, Ryan Poles chose to build around Fields and give him more support.

The Claypool trade was an indication of Poles trying to give Fields more to work with. It has not worked out so far. Despite Claypool being on the PUP list now, it does not mean that he will miss any game action at this point. It is still a setback as far as practicing goes.
