The NFL will showcase an interconference matchup between the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers in Week 17. It's time to continue our NFL odds series with a Texans-49ers prediction and pick based on Texans-49ers odds.
The Texans are coming off a huge win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Although, I should say that it isn't as big of a win as it could've been. Both teams were missing a ton of players due to covid-19, but the Chargers were missing every star they had besides Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen. Houston took advantage of it and beat the Chargers in every facet of the game. Rookie QB Davis Mills played the game of his life throwing for two touchdowns. The defense came up clutch and shut down Herbert and Allen. They even took an interception back for six points which sealed the deal. Houston doesn't have much going for them as they are just 4-11 on the year, but Mills could be the future if he continues to play like he is.

The 49ers are coming off a miserable loss to the Tennessee Titans. They allowed the Titans to come back and win the game late which might have lost the 49ers' chances at the NFC West division title. A win in both of their final two games will put them back into the playoffs for the second time in five seasons under coach Kyle Shanahan. Jimmy Garoppolo might miss this game with a sprained thumb on his throwing hand. That would see rookie Trey Lance start for the second time this year and that could really switch things up for this offense. Houston has another chance at being a spoiler for the 49ers like they were last week to the Chargers.

Why The Texans Could Cover The Spread
Believe it or not, the Texans have a great chance at covering this spread. They upset the Chargers last week after putting up 41 points. They are capable of covering 12ish points, especially with the 49ers' QB concerns. I actually don't think it matters who is at QB for San Francisco, the Texans are playing well lately and I expect them to continue to do so. Mills is finding his groove right now and it seems he might become the future quarterback in Houston. Houston will get a ton of players back from the covid-19 list which will give them an even better chance at covering. I won't go as far as saying Houston will win this game, but I think they will keep it close. If the defense can force Lance to commit a couple of turnovers, then they will likely cover this spread.
Why The 49ers Could Cover The Spread
The 49ers need to get better in the fourth quarter. They haven't had any issues scoring points in the first half, but they've been sloppy in the second half of games which has lost them games this year. Lance will get more playing time this week even if Garoppolo ends up playing. So it will be on Lance to find a rhythm and lead the offense. Deebo Samuel is playing very well right now and is the only receiver in NFL history with 1,200 receiving yards and 300 rushing yards in the same season. If Samuel plays well and the offense is rolling, then they should have a great chance at covering this spread. The defense will need to step up and not let what happened last week affect them.
Final Texans-49ers Prediction & Pick
I am going to take the Houston Texans to cover this large spread. I expect the 49ers to find a way to win the game late, but I don’t think it will be by more than 12 points. Houston can win three straight games for the first time since 2018 if they get it done. But for this week, I expect them to continue to play well and give the 49ers fits for most of the game.
