Why The Tigers Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Tigers are 17th in the majors in runs scored, while sitting 19th in batting average, 23rd in base percentage, and 18th in slugging. With Kerry Carpenter on the IL, the Tigers will need production from Javier Baez. Baez is hitting just .194 on the year, with a .223 on-base percentage. He has nine doubles and a home run, leading to 23 RBIs. Baez has also stolen six bases and scored 14 times. He is joined by Matt Vierling. Vierling is hitting .288 this year with a .322 on-base percentage. He has six doubles, four triples, and seven home runs. This has led to 28 RBIs and 23 runs scored this year.

Riley Greene continues to score a ton of runs. He is hitting .234 on the year with a .338 on-base percentage. He has ten doubles, a triple, and ten home runs. This has led to 22 RBIs. Further, he has scored 36 times this year. Rounding out the top producers this year is Mark Canha. He is hitting .247 this year but with a .358 on-base percentage. He has ten doubles and six home runs, leading to 24 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

Tigers pitching is tenth in team ERA while sitting seventh in WHIP and 10th in opponent batting average.  Reese Olson will be on the mound for the Tigers in this one. He is 1-5 on the year with a 1.92 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. His ERA ranks him fifth in the majors. In Olson's last five starts, he has given up five runs, but just two earned, in 28 innings of work. Still, even with a .64 ERA< he has a 1-1 record and the Tigers have won just one of those games.

Why The Red Sox Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Red Sox are 14th in the majors in runs scored, while sitting 15th in batting average, 15th in base percentage, and 11th in slugging. Rafael Devers has led the way this year. He is hitting .279 on the year with a .375 on-base percentage. He has 11 doubles and 10 home runs, which has led to 26 RBIs. Further, he has scored 28 times this year. Meanwhile, Ceddanne Rafela leads the team in RBIs this year. Rafela is not hitting well, hitting just .205 on the year with a .234 on-base percentage. He has nine doubles, two triples, and five home runs, leading to 28 RBIs. Rafela has also scored 26 times.

Like the Tigers, the Red Sox are missing a major bat. Tyler O'Neill is out as well for the Red Sox in this one. Still, Wiilyer Abreu is in the lineup. He is hitting .278 on the year with a .350 on-base percentage. He has 13 doubles and six home runs, leading to 22 RBIs and 25 runs scored. Rounding out the top bats is Jarren Duran. Duran is hitting .258 on the year with a .320 on-base percentage. He has 16 doubles, eight triples, and three home runs, leading to 23 RBIs. Duran has also stolen 11 bases and scored 32 times this year.

The Red Sox are third in team ERA while sitting sixth in WHIP and seventh in opponent batting average. Cooper Criswell will be on the mound for the Red Sox in this one. He is 2-2 with a 3.96 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. The last time out was a struggle though. Criswell has up seven runs in just four innings, taking the loss in the game.  Criswell has struggled as of late, giving up 14 runs in his last 13 innings of work.

Final Tigers-Red Sox Prediction & Pick

Neither offense is great this year, but they do have the ability to score. Both teams are also sending out pitchers who have struggled as of late. While the Tigers and the Red Sox are both missing major contributing parts of their lineups, they should be able to find ways to score against this pitching matchup. Take the over in this one.
