The Green Bay Packers have had a rocky start to their 2023 NFL season. They have left fans and analysts alike scratching their heads. With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Packers have a chance to address their biggest need and turn their season around. In this article, we will take a closer look at the Packers' season so far, identify their biggest need, and make a case for why they must address it at the trade deadline.

The Green Bay Packers' Season So Far

The Packers' 2023 season so far has been a mixed bag, with a 2-4 record. In their season opener against the Chicago Bears, the Packers won 38-20, with quarterback Jordan Love, running back Aaron Jones, and the defense all having standout performances. They followed that up with a split against the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints.

However, afterward, they lost their next three games to the Detroit Lions, Las Vegas Raiders, and Denver Broncos respectively. In their most recent game against the Broncos, the Packers lost despite a respectable performance from Love. He threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Despite their losing record, there are some positive signs for the Packers. Running back AJ Dillon has emerged as a key contributor, leading the team in rushing yards with 255. Of course, they want more from him moving forward. Additionally, the defense has shown flashes of excellence. Players like Rashan Gary, De'Vondre Campbell, and Jaire Alexander making big plays. However, the team will need to improve in all areas if they hope to turn their season around and make a playoff push.

Here we will look at the biggest need that the Green Bay Packers must address at the 2023 NFL Trade Deadline.

The Packers Need to… HOLD

In 2023, the Packers currently hold the third-highest dead cap space in the NFL. This amounts to $60 million. They are responsibly transitioning into a new era following the Aaron Rodgers era while striving to stay competitive. Take note that extending the contract of edge defender Rashan Gary might require a substantial investment. In addition, Green Bay also needs to revamp its safety positions this offseason. Despite these, we do not think they should make any significant moves, either buying or selling, as the trade deadline approaches.

Of course, opposing teams might express interest in edge defender Preston Smith now that Gary is back in action, and rookie Lukas Van Ness is making progress. However, Smith's recently inked contract provides good value for both parties.

Remember that even if the Packers had a 4-2 record instead of 2-4, there wouldn't be a compelling reason to make acquisitions at this year's trade deadline. Their primary objective for 2023 is to assess Love and determine the foundation for 2024 and beyond. This entails granting young players the opportunity for both practice and game experience. They should also avoid unnecessarily sacrificing future resources like draft picks and potentially salary cap space for the current season.

More Draft Capital?

On the other hand, some might argue that they should trade away almost anyone possible to secure additional draft capital. This is for people counting on the draft to turn the team's fortunes around.

Key veterans like De’Vondre Campbell and Smith carry significant cap hits into 2024. Rasul Douglas has one year left on his contract, and Keisean Nixon becomes a free agent after this season. They are, in theory, good trade pieces. However, we don't believe this is a clear solution.

Again, this season is about evaluating Love. Trading away key players, even on the defensive side, would likely exacerbate this evaluation process. For instance, if the Packers traded one or two of the players mentioned earlier, it would weaken the defense.

This would likely result in the defense allowing more points, putting the Packers at a greater disadvantage. This would limit the Packers' ability to run the ball and place Love in even more predictable passing situations. Consequently, the advantage would shift to the opponent, making it even more challenging to move the ball. In summary, Love's situation would worsen.

Furthermore, the Packers have already accumulated over 20 draft picks in the past two drafts. Adding another mid to late Day 3 pick won't significantly impact the team. What they need are impact players, not more prospects for development.

Of course, GM Brian Gutekunst needs to remain open to offers from other teams. As such, if a truly irresistible deal comes along, he should certainly consider it.

Looking Ahead

Ultimately, everyone is seeking a solution for the Packers, whether it involves turning things around this season or focusing on 2024. Nevertheless, to some extent, the current situation is a result of the Packers' decision to rely heavily on inexperienced players this season. It may not be ideal, but it's the reality they are facing. That said, right now the best approach may be to hold at the deadline to maximize their current resources.
