Amid the global coronavirus pandemic, boxing fans will have something to look forward to once the outbreak ceases. Pound-for-pound four-division champion Canelo Alvarez and IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin have agreed to a trilogy bout in the future, according to Lance Pugmire of The Athletic.

The two parties had been working on the kinks of this deal but were unauthorized to speak until an official announcement was made on the postponement of Alvarez’ planned super-middleweight unification fight against Billy Joe Saunders, which was previously scheduled for May 2.

Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 knockouts) is hoping to first fight Saunders (29-0, 14 KOs) at Las Vegas T-Mobile Arena, a bout that will be followed by this trilogy-settling fight against Golovkin.

The hope is to have the two can fight on Sept. 12 at AT&T Stadium outside Dallas, though date and location remain fluid due to the conditions. Boxing, along with many other sports, has taken a halt due to this pandemic that threatens several areas of the world.

Alvarez negotiated with his promoter Golden Boy for a beefed-up (and undisclosed) compensation package to go along with the 10-fight, $350 million deal he struck in late 2018 with the streaming giant DAZN.

Alvarez and Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KOs) staged drew during a September 2017 fight and went at it again a year later, resulting in a narrow Alvarez victory by majority decision.

MGM Resorts announced its decisions to suspend all events and operations at T-Mobile Arena’s host hotel, the MGM Grand, and that it won't accept hotel reservations before May 1. That has forced many promoters to pivot, including Golden Boy — though many could restructure talks if the venues become available after the coronavirus has been contained.
