After a successful title defense of the IBF and IBO middleweight titles last December, it appears that Gennadiy Golovkin could soon have a chance to win more belts. But unifying more belts in the division is also what WBA middleweight champion Ryota Murata wants. And according to reports, a fight between these two champions is already in the works.

Representatives for both Golovkin and Murata have reportedly discussed a potential title unification bout set to take place on New Year’s Eve, according to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix.

Holding the potential fight on New Year’s Eve presents an opportunity for the title unification bout to be watched by a lot of audiences in Japan. Murata, however, has not stepped into the ring since a fifth-round technical knockout victory over Steve Butler back in December 2019. This is why the 35-year-old, who holds a record of 16 wins with two losses and 13 knockouts, is also planning to fight in June to prepare for the potential Golovkin bout.

However, it is unclear whether Golovkin will also have a preparation fight for the potential title unification bout. The 37-year-old has fought more recently than Murata, stopping Kamil Szeremeta in seven rounds in his most recent fight back in December.

A fight against Gennadiy Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) is something that Murata has wanted ever since he became a super champion at middleweight following Canelo Alvarez giving up a belt to fight Callum Smith at super middleweight. Since then, the Japanese champion has set his sights on the likes of Golovkin, WBO champion Demetrius Andrade, and WBC champion Jermall Charlo. If this potential title bout pushes through, then he may just get the fight that he wants.
