Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston made all kinds of history on Sunday in his team's Week 17 NFL regular-season finale overtime loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The fifth-year former Heisman Trophy winning signal-caller threw a game-ending pick-six, solidifying his “30-30” season—that is, 30 passing touchdowns and 30 interceptions.
According to NFL Research on Twitter, the 25-year-old Buccaneers gunslinger became the first quarterback in league history to throw 30 or more touchdowns and interceptions in the same season.
The 6-foot-4 Jameis Winston, a former first-overall pick out of Florida State for the Bucs in the 2015 NFL Draft, also has a chance to lead the league in passing yards. Entering Week 17, Winston completed 367 passes for 4,908 yards. On Sunday, he chipped in another 201 yards, two touchdowns, and two picks, including the game-sealing pick-six in OT. He finishes with 33 TD's and 30 INT's.
The Dallas Cowboys have yet to play, though, and franchise quarterback Dak Prescott is second in the league with 4,599 passing yards. That means Prescott needs 510 yards in a single game to reach Winston's mark.
So, in all likelihood, Jameis Winston will be the first ever player in the NFL to throw more than 30 touchdowns and interceptions and lead the league in passing yards, too, eclipsing 5,000.
Winston is a free agent at the end of the season and it'll be a tough call for the Buccaneers whether to re-sign the one-time Pro-Bowler or not. Reportedly, Jameis Winston is seeking a contract with $30 million or more average annual value. It's possible the Bucs simply part with the league's leading passer instead and go young and draft a QB early in the 2020 NFL Draft.
It is striking how often the conventional wisdom on Jameis Winston changed throughout the season. He seemed done in Tampa. Then he came alive in the second half of the season. Then he finished with two home-field losses. Nothing is ever predictable with him… but he definitely leaves a memorable impression.
