There was a time the Houston Texans thought that Brock Osweiler was their quarterback of the future. No, seriously.
Back in 2016, Osweiler signed a four-year, $72 million deal with the Texans in spite of having very limited experience as a starter.
Not so surprisingly, the expensive experiment did not go very well. Osweiler spent just one season in Houston, throwing for 2,957 yards, 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions before being traded to the Cleveland Browns.
But in spite of Osweiler being under center for the Texans in 2016, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins still had a good season. He caught 78 passes for 954 yards and four touchdowns.
It actually was Hopkins' least productive season outside of his rookie campaign. But considering Houston's quarterback situation at the time, it was still a nice year.
Now a member of the Arizona Cardinals, Hopkins took a shot at Osweiler on Instagram Live:
âIf I could do it with Brock Osweiler, I think I could do it with anybody,â said Hopkins, via B/R Gridiron.
Ouch.
Hopkins spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Texans. He made four Pro Bowl appearances while also earning three First-Team All-Pro selections. Last month, Houston made the puzzling decision to trade Hopkins to the Cardinals for running back David Johnson and a second-round draft pick. It was a rather skimpy return for a player of Hopkins' talent (the teams also swapped fourth-round picks).
Now, Hopkins will be catching passes from young, upcoming signal-caller Kyler Murray. Murray has already accomplished more during his rookie campaign than Osweiler did throughout his entire NFL career.
