As part of the promotion for her new song “Used To Be Young,” Miley Cyrus is also hosting a series of the same name on TikTok in which she opens up about famous experiences she went through when she… wait for it… used to be young. Wednesday's installment covered Cyrus' infamous 2008 Vanity Fair photo shoot, in which she courted controversy by posing topless as a 15 year old and star of the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana.
“We gotta go there,” Cyrus said as she began looking at the photo, shot by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz.

“Everyone knows the controversy of the photo but they don’t really know the behind-the-scenes, which is always much more meaningful,” Cyrus explained. “My little sister, Noah, was sitting on Annie's lap and actually pushing the button of the camera, taking the pictures. My family was on set.”
Interestingly, one of Cyrus' most vivid recollections from the shoot centered not on being topless, but rather on the makeup she got to wear. “This was the first time I ever wore red lipstick,” she explained. “Because Patti Dubroff, who did my makeup, thought that that would be another element that would divide me from Hannah Montana.”
Speaking of her breakout role, Cyrus attributed the hoopla generated by the photo to her image as a Disney Channel star. “This image of me is a complete opposite of the bubblegum pop star that I had been known for being and that’s what was so upsetting.”
“But — really brilliant choices, looking back now, from those people,” she said regarding the stylistic choices of Leibovitz, Dubroff and others involved with the shoot.
At the time of the magazine's publication, Cyrus received tons of media attention and public backlash for the baring-all pose, but her new TikTok series gave her the chance to look at the event through fresh eyes. Miley Cyrus will be sharing personal clips on TikTok all week as part of the buildup to her “Used To Be Young” song release.
