The Los Angeles Chargers have an important decision to make with free agent wide receiver Mike Williams. Williams is unquestionably the team's biggest free agent this offseason, with his potential return a hot Bolts topic ahead of the NFL Draft and free agency period. On Friday, USA Today reporter Tyler Dragon revealed the Chargers' plan for Williams.

Per Dragon, the Chargers aren't planning on letting Mike Williams enter free agency. Los Angeles will work towards a long-term agreement with the free agent-to-be, though if they cannot come to terms, they will franchise tag him as a last resort.

This isn't particularly surprising, given that head coach Brandon Staley spoke at length about how the Chargers need to continue helping quarterback Justin Herbert develop and progress. It would be a pretty poor look if Staley and Los Angeles proceeded to let one of Herbert's favorite targets depart via free agency.

Williams, 27, set career highs across the board for the Chargers in 2021, totaling 76 catches for 1,146 yards and nine touchdowns in 16 games played.

The Clemson product played out the season on his fifth-year option, which was worth $15.68 million. The Chargers have until March 8, the deadline for which teams can apply the franchise tag, to come to terms with the former first-round pick on a long-term contract.
