The Los Angeles Chargers have been hindered by injuries to begin the season and another vital member of their defense will be sidelined for an extended period of time.
According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Chris Harris Jr. has been placed on injured reserve due to a foot injury.
It was reported on Monday that Harris had suffered a foot injury during Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers. The extent of the injury was unknown, but he was given a timetable of 4-6 six weeks to return for the Chargers.
Instead of keeping him on the active roster while he recovers, Los Angeles is electing to place him on injured reserve. In doing so, Harris will have to miss a minimum of three weeks, and barring any setbacks, he'll be on the field again at some point this season.
The loss of Harris is a crucial one for Los Angeles, as he's been playing well for them in his first season with the team. The veteran cornerback, prior to his injury, had recorded 15 tackles and one pass breakup. In addition to that, he only allowed nine receptions on 13 targets in his first three games.
Following the move to place Harris on injured reserve, the Chargers promoted Jahleel Addae to the active roster. Addae is in his seventh season with Los Angeles after a one-year stint with the Houston Texans in 2019.
With Harris out for at least a month, the Chargers will likely lean on Michael Davis a bit more, while Casey Hayward and Desmond King operate the other two cornerback spots. Still, with Derwin James out for the season, the absence of Harris cannot be understated.
