The status of Patrick Mahomes for the AFC Championship Game is undetermined as the Kansas City Chiefs hope to defend their Super Bowl championship. While Mahomes continues to go through the league's concussion protocol, Brett Favre hopes the NFL follows their own guidelines on head injuries.

“This is a test for the NFL, right now,” Favre said about the Chiefs' QB entering concussion protocol, via TMZ. “To see a star player in a crucial, crucial game, what will happen with their decision. . . . The protocol’s in place. Let’s see if they follow it.”

Mahomes would suffer a concussion in Sunday's narrow win by the Chiefs over the Cleveland Browns. The reigning Super Bowl MVP would be taken to the ground by Mack Wilson of the Browns as his neck would be twisted awkwardly.

Upon getting up from the hit, Mahomes was visibly woozy and looked like he was confused as to where he was. He would be taken to the locker room immediately and was ruled out for the rest of the Chiefs-Browns game soon after.

But before Mahomes can return to the field for the Chiefs, he'll need to clear the NFL's concussion protocols. If Mahomes is ruled out of this weekend's contest with the Bills, Favre — who experienced plenty of head injuries himself — believes the decision will be made to help Mahomes long-term.

“I played 321 straight games, it kind of goes against everything I stood for when I played,” Favre told TMZ.com. “But you’ve gotta be smart. You’ve gotta be smart. I was never faced with the decision that he potentially will face this week. And ultimately the decision may fall on the doctors. And if they choose that he doesn’t play, then it’s the right move, because of the long-term damage.”

Of course, the league would prefer to see Mahomes on the field in an anticipated matchup with Josh Allen when the Chiefs face the Bills. Regardless of what the league desires, hopefully the right decision is made on Mahomes that keeps him out of harm's way.
