Kansas City’s title defense couldn’t have gone to a better start in their 34-20 win over the Houston Texans in the opening game of the 2020 NFL season.

Perhaps one of the few downsides of that win was the injury on starting cornerback Charvarius Ward, who suffered a broken hand in the third quarter of the game.

The 24-year old, however, may still be able to play in the Chiefs’ Week 2 game against the LA Chargers. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport, while Ward is scheduled to undergo surgery on his hand, there is a possibility that he will put a cast on it and play on, especially given that the team will have three more days to prepare for the Chargers.

This is a welcome development for the Chiefs, since cornerback is one position in Steve Spagnulo’s defense where they are relatively thin. Aside from Ward, the team’s other starting cornerback, Bashaud Breeland, is still serving a four-game suspension for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.

Against the Texans, it was rookie L’Jarius Sneed who started in Breeland’s place, and played well alongside Ward before his injury. The 23-year old Sneed, a fourth round pick in this year’s draft, had the game’s only interception, while also helping Kansas City position themselves for their final touchdown with a 39-yard return in the final quarter.

Ward was an important part of the Chiefs’ run to the Super Bowl last season, as he played in all 16 games for Kansas City, tallying 74 combined tackles, 10 passes deflected, two interceptions, and a forced fumble in his second season for the team.
