Could Succession be on the way back? According to an HBO exec, much of that decision depends on the creator of the popular series.

The HBO and Max show created by Jesse Armstrong wrapped in 2023 after four seasons, from June 3, 2018, to May 28, 2023. During that time, it averaged 8.7 million viewers across its fourth season, with 2.9 viewers tuning into its season finale, Forbes reported.

It was based around the Roy family, who owned a global media and entertainment empire in NYC called Waystar RoyCo. There was infighting among the family in a battle to control the company amidst the health of the patriarch.

The series starred a stellar cast consisting of Hiam Abbass, Nicholas Braun, Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Peter Friedman, Natalie Gold, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, Sarah Snook, Jeremy Strong, Rob Yang, Dagmara Domińczyk, Arian Moayed, J. Smith-Cameron, Justine Lupe, David Rasche, Fisher Stevens, and Alexander Skarsgård.

It's won numerous awards and nominations, including 75 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, with 19 wins.

Considering its success, fans would surely welcome a new season. According to HBO CEO Casey Bloys, it's not out of the question.

Casey Bloys weighs in on Succession reboot

In a recent interview with Variety, Bloys was asked whether Succession would ever return as a spinoff.

“Just like I was saying to Mike White [creator of White Lotus], if he wants to do it, I would take Jesse [Armstrong's] lead on that,” he said. “If for some reason Jesse called and said, ‘I've been thinking about it, and I really want to do a spinoff,' I would say, ‘Great.'”

“But there are some shows that lend themselves to a Game of Thrones [trajectory],” the exec added. “The universe that George [R.R. Marin] has created has so many different eras and so many different families, and that lends itself to a lot of different takes. I don't think that Succession normally does. But first and foremost, it would be up to Jesse, and I would follow his lead. I think he's taking some time now to figure out what he wants to do, but we'll see what he wants to do next. He needs a little time to decompress after the show and think about what he wants to do.”

Beyond Succession, another popular Max hit, The White Lotus, might be going beyond Season 3.

Bloys said, “I know Mike has a lot of ideas for where it could go. We're lucky to be in business with him. And we have actors who now really, really want to be on the show because it's a great opportunity and it's great writing. So I think as long as he wants to do it, we'll go along for the ride. He's really built a very interesting model to go from different parts of the world and have a rotating cast.”

It's good to know that a Succession reboot is not out of the question. Maybe once the creator Jesse Armstrong gets his head around some ideas, we could see something emerge from the popular series.
