Dak Prescott's contract extension was once an “imminent” deal, as Jerry Jones said. Then, the season started, and the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys proceeded to play not only the best football of his career but also some of the best in the NFL.

Through three weeks, Prescott is in the thick of the MVP conversation, throwing for an NFL high 74.5% completion rate to go with 920 yards and nine touchdowns. He's not only blowing expectations out of the water, but he's also raising his price tag.

Prescott's $40 million “request” in the offseason doesn't look nearly as absurd as it once did, while anything below $35 million may be an underpay by the Cowboys, depending on whom you talk to. That's because he's taking care of business on the field, which, as he says, is his main focus.

Said Prescott on Thursday, via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk:

The reason we’re having contract talks is because of what I do on the field. That’s the main focus, and that’s my focus in everything I do. Talk about the ads, the marketing, all this stuff, I know realistically none of that happens if I’m not handling my business on the field. For me, about it’s about taking care of that – being the best football player I can and a lot of good things and great things happen when you do that.”

Prescott is focusing on what will get him a massive contract extension, even if it won't happen during the season. The Cowboys, at 3-0, are reaping the benefits. He will be too soon.
